Little Cayman Fishing Anglers come to this tiny isle for its excellent bonefishing. Bonefish and permit, both caught in the flats, and tarpon, reeled in from brackish tarpon lake, draw fishermen. The Southern Cross Club fishing lodge first attracted anglers to these waters; today McCoy's Diving and Fishing Lodge also caters to fishermen. Guests at other island resorts (or daytrippers) can arrange fishing guides from these lodges. Shore, reef, and deep-sea fishing are available year around and local guides can provide tackle and point out the best fishing spots. Catch-and-release is encouraged by local captains and applies to all catches that will be not eaten and all billfish that aren't record contenders. Reef fishing is also found along the many miles of reefs that surround this island. Fly Fishing Little Cayman is the top destination of the
three Cayman Islands for those using light tackle and fly fishing. Fly fishing continues to grow in popularity here but anglers should bring all their equipment guides and charters do not supply saltwater fly rods. Bonefishing Bonefishing, while not as good as some islands in the Caribbean or the Florida Keys, is a favorite activity and a challenge to anglers. These three- to eight-pound fish are seen in the shallow areas called muds, places where the sea is churned up by the bottom-feeding fish. Guides recommend baiting with fry. Bonefish can be caught all day although, like other types of fishing, the success rate depends on many factors such as weather and tides. The best bonefishing around Little Cayman is usually found at the South Hole Sound. Tarpon Fishing Tarpon fishing is also popular on Little Cayman. Tarpon Pond, a brackish lake north of Blossom Village, is home to many 20 pound tarpon. Fly fishermen will have best luck at this site in early morning and late afternoon. Deep Sea Fishing If you are looking for deep water action, charters seek gamefish, including blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dolphin (dorado) and barracuda.
